In the 12th century, the construction of the new Church took place where the Church is still today, the property of which also included the garden of Panagia.
At the end of the 19th century, works were carried out to shape the whole area with the creation of a square and the rebuilding of the old coffee house called “Kafeneion i Terpsithea”. Since then it began to take the form it has today, operating as a country center.
With donations of adjacent properties, the space took the form of a space for cultural events with the operation of a cinema from the historical “Agiasos Reading Room” as well as a winter and summer cinema.
And these in parallel with the function of the space as a place of meeting and entertainment. A reference point of the garden of Panagia is a strong plane tree several hundred years old.
Around 1830 a cyclone broke off its highest branches, in the place of which others grew over time. In recent years, pruning operations have been carried out again to cut its aging branches.
In the shade of the branches of this sycamore, Prime Ministers, kings and Presidents of the Republic, Patriarchs and other notables rested and had fun with the inhabitants of the island. It should be noted here that the fame and history of the garden of Panagia did not leave the Lesbian Letters and Arts unaffected as it became a source of inspiration for writers, painters and various artists.
We mention for example: The Prime Minister of Greece Eleftherios Venizelos who visited the Garden of Our Lady at the beginning of May 1915, where he was served a meal. The car that brought him from Mytilini was the first to appear in Agiasos.
